How to Attack in Dungeons & Dragons: ELI5

Published by on August 1, 2024

Hey there adventurer! Ready to learn how to attack monsters in Dungeons & Dragons (D&D)? Let’s dive in and learn how to swing that sword or cast that spell.

Dagger and Dice on a table

Step 1: What Do You Want to Attack With?

First, you need to decide what you’re using to attack. Do you have a sword, a bow and arrow, or maybe some magic spells? Each character in D&D has different weapons or spells they can use.

  • Sword or Axe: If you want to hit something up close.
  • Bow and Arrow: If you want to hit something far away.
  • Magic Spells: If you want to cast cool magic at the enemy.

Step 2: Roll the Dice

Now, it’s time to roll the dice! We use a special 20-sided die called a d20. Rolling the dice tells us if your attack hits the monster or not.

  • Roll the d20: Give it a good roll!
  • Add Your Bonus: Check your character sheet for your attack bonus (it’s a number you add to your dice roll).

For example, if you roll a 12 on the d20 and your attack bonus is +3, you get a 15 total.

Step 3: Did You Hit the Monster?

Next, we compare your total number to the monster’s Armor Class (AC). Think of AC as the monster’s shield.

  • If Your Total is Higher or Equal: Hooray! You hit the monster!
  • If Your Total is Lower: Uh-oh! You missed.

Step 4: Roll for Damage

If you hit the monster, now you get to roll for damage. Damage is how much you hurt the monster. Different weapons and spells have different dice for damage. Your character sheet will tell you which one to use.

  • Roll the Damage Dice: This could be another d20 or other dice like a d6 (six-sided die).
  • Add Any Extra Damage: Sometimes you get to add extra points to your damage roll.

For example, if your sword does 1d8 damage and you roll a 5, and you have a +2 damage bonus, you do 7 damage total.

Step 5: Tell the Story

The best part is describing what happens! Did you slice the monster with your sword, shoot it with an arrow, or blast it with a fireball? Use your imagination!

  • Be Creative: “I swing my sword and hit the goblin right on its shoulder!”
  • Have Fun: Enjoy making up the story with your friends and Dungeon Master.

Quick Recap

  1. Choose Your Attack: Sword, bow, or spell.
  2. Roll the d20: See if you hit.
  3. Compare to Armor Class (AC): Did you hit or miss?
  4. Roll for Damage: How much did you hurt the monster?
  5. Describe the Attack: Tell the fun story of your hit!

And that’s how you attack in Dungeons & Dragons! Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy the adventure with your friends. Happy adventuring, brave hero!
